Symantec (SYMC) Has More To Say About Norton Hacking

I detailed the attack by hackers on Symantec, the maker of popular Norton Antivirus software in my article, “Lords Of Kings Hack Norton Antivirus, Are You Safe?”

Subsequently, Symantec’s take on the hacking was detailed in “Symantec Says Norton Is Safe After Lords of Kings Attack.”

Symantec had stated that the stolen code was 10 years old and did not include the code for its flagship product Norton Antivirus for consumers.

Now Symantec is backtracking. In an email to The Arora Report, Symantec admits,

“Upon investigation of the claims made by Anonymous regarding source code disclosure, Symantec believes that the disclosure was the result of a theft of source code that occurred in 2006.  We believe that source code for the 2006-era versions of the following products was exposed:  Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition; Norton InternetSecurity; Norton SystemWorks (Norton Utilities and Norton GoBack); and pcAnywhere.  Due to the age of the exposed source code, except as specifically noted below, Symantec customers – including those running Norton products — should not be in any increased danger of cyber attacks resulting from this incident.

Customers of Symantec’s pcAnywhere product may face a slightly increased security risk as a result of this exposure if they do not follow general best practices.  Symantec is currently in the process of reaching out to our pcAnywhere customers to make them aware of the situation and to provide remediation steps to maintain the protection of their devices and information.  Since 2006, Symantec has instituted a number of policies and procedures to prevent a similar incident from occurring.”         Read More at Forbes

Symantec Says Norton Is Safe After Lords of Kings Attack

Symantec, maker of Norton Antivirus, has admitted to a major security breach by a group called the Lords of Dharmaraja, which in English means ‘Kings of Religion’.

For background, please see my article from January 6th, “Lords Of Kings Hack Norton Antivirus, Are You Safe?

In the last piece, I stated the key question, “Are your computers and emails still safe if protected by Norton?”

Symantec has provided the answer in an email to The Arora Report as follows:

We investigated their claims to Norton Antivirus and found them not to be true and that Norton Antivirus is safe and there this incident has no impact on our consumer products and that are consumer customers are also not implicated and are protected.

Bear in mind, some of the confusion also stems from the name of our products.  Anything starting with a “Norton” pertains to consumer only.  We didn’t want to drop that brand.  Anything starting with “Symantec” pertains to our enterprise products only.  So, it’s easy to see how “Norton Antivirus” and “Symantec Antivirus” can get confused.

Symantec seems to admit that the Lords of Kings are in possession of a document from 1999 that spells out how the software worked, but claims there was no code in it.

Symantec also admits the Lords of Kings have successfully hacked and obtained the code for Symantec Antivirus 10.2, a product that is not the same as Norton Antivirus.

The other product in question is Symantec End Point Protection 11.0.  The current version of End Point Protection is 12.2…Read More at Forbes

Lords Of Kings Hack Norton Antivirus, Are You Safe?

Symantec, (SYMC) one of the largest computer security firms in the world, seems to need urgent help with computer security. There are reports that Symantec has confirmed that hackers have stolen a portion of its popular flagship product Norton Antivirus.

Are your computers and emails still safe if protected by Norton? This is the key question of the moment.

The Lords of Dharmaraja, which in English means Lords of Kings Of Religion, claim to be in possession of the source code of Norton Antivirus.

A member of the group was posting on Google+ under the handle YamaTough, the content now seems to be removed perhaps by Google (GOOG). It is a dark group indeed, Yama in English means Lord of Death.

A statement from hackers on Pastebin has been removed, but a cache is still available. Here is the statement that has been deleted:

  1. As of now we start sharing with all our brothers and followers information from the Indian Militaty Intelligence servers, so far we have discovered within the Indian Spy Programme source codes of a dozen software companies which have signed agreements with Indian TANCS programme and CBI.
  2. Now we release confidential documentation we encountered of Symantec corporation and it’s Norton AntiVirus source code which we are going to publish later on, we are working out mirrors as of now since we experience extreme pressure and censorship from US and India government agencies.

INTEL CORPORATION (INTC) EARNINGS

Intel Corporation (INTC) reported upside financial results and guidance  in spite of  weak consumer PC trends and  “iPad effect.”  People buying tablets instead of laptops is called “iPad effect.”

The  excellent financial performance is attributable to Intel Corporation  firing on all cylinders, success of  Sandy Bridge and heavy demand for servers. Sandy Bridge is the code name of a new family of  CPU chips that integrate high quality graphics.

We will provide actionable signals on Intel Corporation in the  Real Time Feed of the ZYX Buy Change Alert .

INTEL (INTC) TO POWER CHROMEBOOK

Google (GOOG) has just announced a new set of devices called Chromebook.  According to GOOG Chromebook boots in eight seconds and resumes instantaneously.  Chromebook is also designed from ground up to defend against malware.

One of the criticisms of Intel (INTC) has been that it is not scoring design wins in new generation devises.  The first two Chromebooks from Samsung and Acer will be powered by INTC.  This is positive for our new long term position in INTC.

Chromebook will also fully support flash from Adobe (ADBE).  This is positive for our position in ADBE.

This development is negative for Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA).
