Talking heads are tripping over each other to echo negative sentiment about Tim Cook. They are even throwing around wild numbers such as $30 billion loss because of Apple (AAPL) Maps without any solid foundation.
I am a late comer to the world of media. Even though I write extensively about technology, business, and investments, I am still deeply rooted in the rigorous analysis that my professors instilled in me in engineering school. It is worth sitting back and pondering how the same theme gets echoed at about the same time in most media outlets.
The same talking heads that not long ago were falling all over themselves to praise Tim Cook have en masse turned against him in the blink of an eye. Piling on is not stopping with Apple Maps, talking heads are dragging out faults with Siri, Apple’s litigation strategy, dependence on hit products, lack of creativity, etc.
The fact is that all of these issues were there when Apple stock marched to $700 on the strength of bullish expectations for the iPhone 5 release. Few gave a thought about these issues when it was unpopular to be negative on Apple or Tim Cook. To some extent it is understandable, as I can testify based on the large amount of hate mail that I have received over the last year from expressing caution about Apple and Tim Cook even though I have been a mega bull on Apple ever since recommending the stock at $131.
