UNDER THE NEW CEO, MICROSOFT SEES THE LIGHT AND CUTS WINDOWS PRICE BY 70% $AMZN $MSFT $GOOG

Microsoft MSFT has reportedly cut the price of Windows 8.1 by 70% for tablets and low cost computers. Original equipment manufacturers will now pay only a $15 license for Windows 8.1 if they install it on devices that sell at retail for under $250, this compares to the previous license cost of $50.

No matter how you look at it, a 70% price cut on an operating system that until recently dominated the computing world with 95% market share shows the desperation and challenges facing Microsoft. TAKE MORE PARTIAL PROFITS ON ZAGG $ZAGG

The ZAGG position is short from $13.85 and 30% of the full core position size is being held.  Profits have previously been taken as low as $4.00.

The just reported earnings were slightly better than expectations. The stock closed at $4.26 but in the aftermarket as of this writing  it is trading in the range of $4.30 to $4.65.

What To Do Now?

Those in the stock may consider taking profits on another 10% tranche.   This will leave 20% of the full core position size.

February natural gas contract is approaching expiration.  30% of the full core position size is being held.  On expiration the contract is likely to be very volatile.  Consider locking in profits on a 20% tranche or two thirds of the position in the zone of $4.20 to $4.91.   February futures contract is at $4.84 as of this writing.  Consider rolling over the remaining 10% tranche to March.

SAMSUNG TRIES GALAXY GEAR WATCHES NOW WITH TIZEN $FB $TSG $INTC $FB $GOOG $AAPL

On Sunday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung announced the release of two new smart watches called Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.  Unlike their predecessor smart watch from Samsung, which was powered by Android, these new models use the Tizen operating system.

To date most of Samsung’s mobile devices have been powered by Android.  Tizen is a way for Samsung to reduce its dependence on Google.  Tizen operating system is based on Linux and is governed by a Technical Steering Group (TSG) in which Samsung (SSNLF) and Intel (INTC) are the major influencers.
