On Monday, Samsung made a 5G announcement promising download of 3D movies in seconds.  Samsung did the most masterful job of spinning a test for the maximum public relations impact that I have seen in a long time.  Samsung served up such a sumptuous treat to the media who seem fascinated by technology. SAMSUNG’S NEW 5G BREAKTHROUGH POINTS TO LONG TERM RISKS FOR APPLE $AAPL

A report from South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency about Samsung offering 5G service by 2020 caught my eye.  Speculation about 5G abounds, so the title was not a surprise.  What was intriguing to me was a claim of transmitting data in the millimeter wave band to a distance of two kilometers. My initial interest was due to my electrical engineering background, I always thought that millimeter wave band was not suitable for long distance transmissions.  There is significant atmospheric attenuation in this band. TechCrunch reports that Microsoft MSFT may spend $1 billion to buy Nook outright from Barnes & Noble NE. In the pre-market Barnes & Noble stock moved up as much as 30% and was still higher by nearly 20% on the day in the afternoon. Microsoft has an existing investment in Nook of about one-sixth of the enterprise. Barnes & Noble has done an incredible job with Nook even though it is nowhere near as popular as the Kindle lineup from Amazon or iPads from Apple AAPL. Amazon started as a book seller.  No wonder it is the leader in the eReader market with its Kindle line of devices.
