S. stock market and the Japanese yen. The chart compares ETF SPY which represents S&P 500 to ETF YCS which represents 100% leveraged inverse position in Japanese yen against the U. S. dollar. The chart shows six incidence of a dip in YCS since December that also correlated with dip in S&P 500.

On Wednesday after the close, eBay disclosed that Carl Icahn has proposed a spin-off of PayPal from eBay. The initial reaction of the stock market was euphoric, with eBay stock jumping to $61.30 in after-hours trading from its closing price of $54.41. Earnings season is in full swing, providing new data points for investors to reassess positions. After a careful review of IBM‘s latest report Tuesday afternoon, I see no reason to buy the stock at current prices. The risk-reward trade off is simply not favorable. IBM reported Q4 earnings per share of $6.13 per share compared to a consensus forecast of $5.99. IBM’s beat was of low quality, primarily due to items such as share repurchases, foreign exchange and tax rates. Of special note is that revenue fell 5%, year over year to $27.7 billion.
