Siri caught the imagination of the masses. iPhone 4S sales took off. Analysts had to scramble to revise their iPhone 4S sales estimates upwards. The revised estimates started another leg up in Apple stock. Prior to iPhone 4S launch, there were serious concerns about Apple’s ability to continue the pace of innovation after Steve Jobs passing. There are days when price action in stocks provides more information than usual, all one has to do is to observe while leaving opinions at the door. Tuesday was one of those days. There were major announcements from BlackBerry as well as Nokia and Apple AAPL stock fell precipitously in the afternoon. On Monday, Samsung made a 5G announcement promising download of 3D movies in seconds. A report from South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency about Samsung offering 5G service by 2020 caught my eye. Speculation about 5G abounds, so the title was not a surprise. What was intriguing to me was a claim of transmitting data in the millimeter wave band to a distance of two kilometers. My initial interest was due to my electrical engineering background, I always thought that millimeter wave band was not suitable for long distance transmissions. TechCrunch reports that Microsoft MSFT may spend $1 billion to buy Nook outright from Barnes & Noble NE. In the pre-market Barnes & Noble stock moved up as much as 30% and was still higher by nearly 20% on the day in the afternoon. Microsoft has an existing investment in Nook of about one-sixth of the enterprise. Barnes & Noble has done an incredible job with Nook even though it is nowhere near as popular as the Kindle lineup from Amazon or iPads from Apple AAPL. Amazon started as a book seller. No wonder it is the leader in the eReader market with its Kindle line of devices.
