CRICKET CAN’T MOVE IPHONES WITHOUT MEATY SUBSIDY, BAD FOR APPLE $AAPL $LEAP $T $S $VZ $GOOG

Since I often take the minority view, I am used to receiving lots of hate mail.  Regarding Apple, the hate mail I receive usually spikes when I write that Apple is overly dependent on subsidies from phone carriers or when I write that my research shows Apple is facing headwinds with less affluent consumers. Of course, I also receive some intelligent and insightful emails, but these dwarf the hate mail. Here is some more hard data to support the thesis that Apple faces challenges on the low-end and that carrier subsidies are its Achilles’ heel. Leap Wireless through its subsidiary

WEEKLY MARKET DIGEST: SEQUESTRATION STARTS, GDP LESS THAN EXPECTATIONS AND INFLATION RISES BUT MARKET DOES NOT CARE $SPY $DIA $QQQ $GLD $SLV $TBT$TLT $USO

(The Weekly Digest reproduces the morning capsules made available every morning before the market open in the Real Time Feeds to the paying subscribers.)    DOLLAR STRENGTHENS IN PERVERSE MARKET ACTION, GOLD VOLATILE March 1, 2013 Today is the day that sequestration sets in.  Many had expected the dollar to fall, but in a perverse action the dollar is strengthening.  Earlier today euro briefly broke 1.30 but as of this writing has bounced back to 1.3007. Usually there is an inverse relationship between the  dollar and gold.  In other words, when the dollar goes up, gold goes down.  Earlier in

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT KICKS HOLE IN BLACKBERRY SECURITY REPUTATION

As BlackBerry attempts to stage a comeback with BB 10, one aspect of its sales pitch is that BlackBerry is famous for its security characteristics.  Now BlackBerry is losing its security aura. The timing could not be worse for BlackBerry of a security warning coming from Canada.   Canada.com reports that the government department in charge of cyber security has issued a warning “to think twice before sending a BlackBerry message.”  The warning is contained in a memo received by Postmedia News using the access to information act from Public Safety Canada.   Public Safety Canada is a department of the Canadian government somewhat similar to the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. One

UPDATE ON S&P 500 SPY $SPY

This post was just published on ZYX Short Change Alert. SPY is very overbought, but still has the potential to run to $155.  It is at $152.10 as of this writing. Those in the position may continue to hold and consider adding in 10% increments in the zone of $153.30 to $155 but not to exceed 55% of the full core position size Those not in the position may consider starting a 10% tranche right here and continue to slowly build up to 55% of the full core

SAMSUNG IMITATES APPLE PASSBOOK WITH NEW WALLET APP WITHOUT NFC

It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.   Apple’s Passbook app has a new fan in Samsung. At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung introduced its new Wallet app.  The preliminary details show that the Wallet app imitates Passbook in several respects.  Apple’s Passbook app allows users to handle mobile payments and to store movie tickets, coupons and other items. No NFC NFC stands for Near Field Communication.  If a device is equipped with an NFC chip, the device can have an app to support a tap-to-pay feature.  Apple devices do not support NFC. I am not privy to Apple’s thinking on the

CHINA’S HUAWEI SPEEDILY ASCENDS TO TAKE ON APPLE AND SAMSUNG

At the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Huawei introduced the world’s fastest smartphone. Most Americans have never heard of Huawei.  Huawei is no small fry; it is a large Chinese company.  Its principal business is networking and telecommunications equipment. It has overtaken Ericsson to become the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world. It is also aggressively competing with Cisco in networking equipment.  It employees 140,000 people and operates in 140 countries. Huawei is new to smartphones but has made great strides.  In smartphones, Huawei’s bread and butter has been providing white-label products to service providers.  According to the research firm IDC, in the

STOCK MARKET TRACES DANGEROUS PATTERN $SPY $GLD $SLV $AAPL $TLT

The stock market has been overbought for a while, and overbought markets can be vulnerable. Usually there is an excuse in the form of bad news that runs the overbought market down to alleviate the overbought condition. Monday was no exception. The bad news was that in Italy, Berlusconi garnered more votes than expected. He is seen as a threat to the austerity implemented by Mario Monti. In somewhat of a response to the news, the DJIA fell 216 points. In the process of falling, the stock market traced a dangerous technical pattern known as an “outside day,” which you can see on the chart linked
